The miracle of being happy right where I am

I don’t read a lot of magazines – mostly because I can’t justify spending that much money on a glossy cover filled with pictures of clothes that I wouldn’t wear even if I could afford them – but last week a friend gave me a stack of “O” Magazines to read.  This afternoon, having one of those great days when my plans were canceled and nothing else had filled in the time, I flipped through them.

I almost didn’t read the article – I was in scan mode, rather than deep reading.  But as I flipped past the page, I happened to notice Martha Beck’s name and I do love her writing.  So I flipped back and read her article “Words to the Wise” in this month’s issue.  Thank goodness!

She talks about the difference between visualizing a goal and visualizing how it would feel to experience that goal.  It’s not a new concept to me, but she laid it out in exactly the words I needed to understand it in a new way.  Specifically, she suggested that you visualize the manifestation of the goal, and then back up and find at least three adjectives to describe how it feels to live inside that manifestation.

As I pictured being out in the world as a successful, well-respected, and accomplished workshop facilitator and speaker, the adjectives that came to mind were excited, strong, fulfilled, and alive.

Then Beck suggests focusing on any experience in life that brings you into a feeling of those adjectives.  That was (as Oprah would say) an “a-ha moment” for me – I’m already getting those feelings from writing this Miracle Journal.  I feel excited because it’s guiding me to examine my life from a new perspective – the perspective that everything is going well and there is a gift around every corner.  I feel strong because I love writing – I love hearing the words and the rhythms in my head and then putting them on paper.  I feel fulfilled because I love sharing my writing… and in this forum I don’t have to rely on anyone else’s approval in order to share.  I feel alive because…well, because of the previous three things and something else that doesn’t really have words to express it.  It just is.

Thank you Ms. Beck for showing me that it’s good to have and follow big dreams, and it’s even better to see how those dreams are already manifesting right here where I am.

You can read Martha Beck’s full article here.  I highly recommend it.
