The miracle of Glee

I’ve made occasional references to Glee in the past, but tonight it gets a post all its own.

This afternoon I re-watched the Glee episode “Sexy” from a couple of weeks ago – the one where Gwyneth Paltrow reprised her role as Holly Holiday.  There is just so much to love in this episode (not to mention that the song “Landslide” is now stuck in my head again).

There is one moment that really stands out for me – Burt Hummel sitting Kurt down for The Talk.  If you watch the show you know how uncomfortable Burt is about addressing anything to do with sex or sexuality, but he consistently pushes his own boundaries in order to be there for his gay son.  This may be the most touching and poignant discussion of sex I’ve EVER seen on television.  Seriously.  It’s the conversation I wish someone had with me when I was a teenager (instead of the incredibly disturbing and still-haunting conversation that my father foisted on me when I was nine, but that’s another story entirely).

“You gotta know it means something. … Kurt, when you’re ready, I want you to be able to do everything. But when you’re ready. I want you to use it as a way to connect to another person. Don’t throw yourself around like you don’t matter. ‘Cause you matter, Kurt.”

How many of us got The Talk that was about mechanics, but not how those mechanics would affect us on the inside?  How many of us got The Talk about the dangers, but not the inner truth of who we are and how we deserve to be treated?  That last line, the one where Burt says, “You matter, Kurt” makes me tear up each time I see it.  And I’ll admit to having watched it three or seven times.

How many of our parents, despite their own fears and insecurities, pushed through and got The Talk THIS RIGHT?!  Probably not many of them.  And that’s no diss to them – they were doing the best they could, and surely it was better than what their parents gave them.  So hallelujah that Glee is brave enough to put something like this on screen for all of us to hear.

No matter how old we are… no matter how many sex partners we’ve had… no matter our sexual orientation, we still need to hear the truth.

Because we matter.

You can watch the scene in the player below.  If you want to see the whole episode, head over to hulu.com.  (If you can’t see the embedded video below, go to hulu.com and watch the episode “Sexy” from around 35:00.)
