I have the coolest friends in the world. Really, I do. For the last few months, I’ve been putting together a presentation in my head. It’s a presentation about doing a successful press interview for a human interest story – my target is people like me who do personal development/personal growth kind of work and want to build a name for themselves.
Like I said, it’s been brewing in my head for a few months. This weekend I finally sat down and put some structure to it. Yesterday I contacted my friend Karen and asked if she would spend an hour listening to it and giving me feedback. Within no time at all she had written back saying, “OF COURSE I will.” Karen likes to pretend that her schedule is wide open and she has nothing going on, but this woman is so busy I get tired just from reading her Facebook feed sometimes. Yet she immediately offered me an hour of her time.
Tonight we had that phone call, and she gave me really kick-ass feedback. And here’s the thing I’m most grateful for – she just gave it to me. She didn’t worry if it would hurt my feelings, or if she was being too harsh, or any of a 100 other things that wouldn’t have been so helpful. She just ran down her list of feedback and she was spot-on with all of it. Iyanla Vanzant would call it “Loving me enough to believe that I can handle the truth.”
I hope that you are lucky enough to have friends who trust you to handle the truth. It is one of the greatest gifts in the world that I know.
Thanks Karen. You rock. I’m so glad that you are my friend. 🙂
