Seeing the Evidence

Since I started working at the Caledonian Record I’ve been clipping out all of the pieces that ran with my byline.  I’ve always liked to have a record of my work and I figured that I wasn’t writing that much, so it wouldn’t pile up too quickly.

Nice concept, but not the truth.  For the last month I’ve had a growing stack of newspaper clippings that needed to be put away but precious little time to do the work of mounting and filing them.  Tonight I finally sat down with all of them and spent about an hour and a half making a record of my time at the newspaper.  It’s amazing to see how much I’ve grown in this position – I started with little 10-inch stories. This weekend I had my first 50-inch Saturday front-page feature.  I feel like a proud Mama!

I’ve learned to make cold calls to people in intimidating positions, how to do interviews, and how to write on a deadline that I’m not sure I can meet.  It’s so exciting to be learning and growing day by day!

Here’s the front page of this week’s feature about the changes in the cigarette tax on both sides of the New Hampshire/Vermont border:

Recently I’ve also been re-reading The Miracle Journal from January 1st and I’m astonished to see how far I’ve come and how much work I’ve done in the past half year.  Thank you all for taking this journey with me.

There is one newspaper interview I wish I’d never had to do – a reporter writing about Evie found me through The Miracle Journal.  I wish there had never been cause to do it.  And yet she did a beautiful job of capturing Evie’s spirit and I’m very grateful to have been a part of it.  Thank you, Shawne.

Thank you Bobbi. Lately I’ve felt like writing about Evie was the only thing I could do and it has really helped. That night at Neskaya was so amazing – the love was palpable. I’m so glad to have danced with you as well.
    Sending you love, Leah
