The gazer

Yesterday I had a remarkable experience. Truthfully I’m still not sure how to talk about it.

Last week I heard about a man named Braco (pronounced Brah-tzo) from Croatia who stands in front of rooms of people and gazes at them.  That’s it – he just stands there and looks.  His gaze is full of so much love and tenderness, people have amazing breakthroughs and experiences.

I believe in a lot of stuff that some people might characterize as “out there”, but this one was a little much for even me – people having miraculous healings because a man looks at them?  That sounded just this side of fantastical.

But it gets even better – some of these “gazings” are broadcast as live online streams and people have THE SAME kinds of responses by watching him on a computer screen.  That was definitely too much for me to believe in.

However this man came highly recommended from someone I trust implicitly and signing on to the live stream only cost $3, so I figured I had nothing to lose.  I could do it on the anniversary of my dad’s death, so if nothing else it would provide a few minutes of restful meditation during a difficult day.

When the man got on stage and stared out into the audience and into the camera, it was astonishing.  He was gazing at hundreds of people in a ballroom in Portland, Oregon and thousands of people online.  But I felt wholeheartedly like he was staring right at me and reaching inside my soul.

I felt like his entire heart was pouring out and offering itself in compassion and service to me.  As I started to cry, I felt like he was ready to cry with me.  And as I let myself open up to the love that he was offering from thousands of miles away, I heard a voice in my head offering apologies on behalf of my father.

I think simply being in the presence of someone whose heart is so open allows our hearts to open in a new way.  Was he actually looking right at me?  Technically…no.  Spiritually…does it matter?  I had exactly the experience I needed to have in that moment as a result of his willingness to stand before us, open and vulnerable.

What an amazing gift.

Thank you Braco.

I’m sorry, Leah. I watched maybe a dozen You-Tube videos of Braco, and while I was very, very moved by the images of audience members who were clearly deeply affected by Braco, my skeptical reporter brain was interfering at every turn, saying things like: “If I saw him gazing at me on a subway, I’d hit 9-1-1 on my cell phone,” and “He’s pretty cute, wonder if he has a girlfriend,” and “Has he ever stubbed his toe in the dark and yelled ‘fuck!'” and “Wonder what’s going through his head when he’s gazing,” etc. Does that make me a bad person?

That’s hilarious, Gail! I’ve spent time with several people who have spiritual followings similar to Braco and I can say for certain that when they stub their toes, they yell “Fuck” just like the rest of us. 🙂
