Finding new evidence

Last month at the Dowsers Convention, I talked for a while with Jean Slatter (here’s another plug for her book, Hiring The Heavens.  Seriously.  Get it.  And no, I don’t get any kickback from her for recommending it.  It’s just that good.)

Jean was explaining to me the concept that we are surrounded by a universe full of things that have no inherent meaning, but our brains are programmed to pick out the things that confirm our own established idea of ourselves and use them as evidence that we’re right about who we are.  (It harkens back to the Course In Miracles lesson, “I have given meaning to everything I see.”)

Essentially, she was saying, you can find evidence for absolutely anything, but we have such a defined sense of self that we keep pulling out the same evidence over and over and saying, “SEE!  I was right!”  We could just as easily pull out opposing evidence, but we choose not to see it because it doesn’t support our established sense of self.

Jean led me through a process to release some old beliefs and embrace some new concepts. We were working with my thoughts about how my work is embraced and valued in the world.  When we were done Jean said, “Now go find evidence for your new beliefs!”

For the first couple of weeks, I forgot to pay attention.

These last couple of weeks, though, I feel like I’m being hit over the head (gently!) with new evidence.  At lunch with a friend yesterday.  Doing some coaching on the phone tonight.  During a call with my prayer partner this morning.  In an email from one of my mentors yesterday who was telling me how much she appreciates me.  Not to mention the free ticket to the Hay House authors’ event and the enthusiasm I feel within myself as I work to accomplish some new goals.

Everywhere I turn, suddenly I’m seeing new evidence that my contribution to this world is valued and desired.  And not just what I do either, but who I am and how I be.

It’s a truly remarkable shift and I’m so grateful to Jean for guiding the way.  And I’m grateful to myself for being ready and willing to take the step.

Thanks for the recommendation. I’m always excited to learn to ways to tap into my spirituality and I have been getting the feeling lately that it is time for me to take the next step in my growth. I just wasn’t sure how to do it. Maybe this is it.
