Angels are watching over me

This weekend I went to Boston to visit some friends. I had two experiences in the car that caught my attention – one a very ordinary miracle, and one an “angels are watching over me” miracle.

1) I don’t love driving in Boston.  It’s not the city traffic that bothers me – I have no trouble driving in New York – it’s that I can’t figure out which streets go where.  The last time I drove in Boston regularly was during the Big Dig and I was perpetually lost.

My schedule called for me to be in Davis Square for part of the afternoon and Harvard Square in the evening.  Not knowing Davis Square very well, I figured I’d put my car in a garage in Harvard Square and pay for the extra several hours plus the subway back and forth, rather than trying to figure out where I was going in Davis Square and the closest parking lot.

Lo and behold, as my GPS was directing me to Harvard Square, it took me right THROUGH the heart of Davis Square.  And even lower and beholder, as I was trying not to hit pedestrians, I saw a sign for the place that I was meeting my friend.  I took note of the building so I could find it when I took the subway back…but lowest and beholdest, there was a community parking lot next door….with FREE parking for EXACTLY the two hours I was going to be there.  To say I was floored would be an understatement.  It’s the kind of ordinary miracle that absolutely makes my day.

2) After a wonderful day in the city, I headed home on Sunday into a winter mess.

Traffic was going pretty slowly – between 40 and 55, depending on how hard the snow was blowing on even given stretch of road.

I feel like I must have one of these hanging around my neck, even though I can’t see it! (I found this beautiful pendant on Etsy – click the image to visit the artist’s page.)

A large SUV and a car were on an entrance ramp as I approached in the right lane.  At the speeds we were all going, they would enter the highway before I got there, so I stayed in the right lane.

Suddenly, the SUV started skidding.  He took a sharp turn toward the guard rail, then over-corrected and headed directly into the center of the highway.  Then he started spinning.  By the time he stopped, he was sitting in the middle of the road facing me.

I’d had just enough time to pull out of the travel lane and into the entrance ramp area to avoid him.  The woman behind him also had just enough time to slow to a stop in the entrance ramp.

The scariest thing was that there was a big wave of traffic right behind me. With the poor visibility, I was pretty sure they hadn’t seen what happened and were unaware of the SUV sitting in the middle of the road.  I have no idea how he did it, but the SUV driver managed to turn his car around and drive off milliseconds before the big wave of traffic would have gotten to him.

The fact that no one was hurt in that incident was an honest-to-goodness miracle.  Extraordinary and magical.  Someone was looking out for every one of us on that road.

Today’s miracle: I have angels flying all around me and guiding my every move!  I am protected!
