Tonight I had the pleasure of being interviewed for the show “Living With Hope” on the Body, Mind & Spirit Network. Trudy Thomas, the host, was delightful and I had a great time! I’ve posted the audio on the Radio page for your listening pleasure.
One of the things I mentioned during the interview was the group I’m participating in to release weight. I wanted to share a little bit about that with you because I’m finding it to be SO helpful!
Over the past couple of years, I’ve put on some extra weight that I’d like to take off. For several months I’ve been playing around the edges of making a commitment to do it. I’d tell myself that I was going to eat healthier, but wouldn’t make an actual plan, so within a couple weeks I was back to lazy eating. I would tell myself that I’d start an exercise plan, but without a specific plan, within a week I was back to watching TV.
Shortly before the new year, a friend asked me if I’d like to take part in a weight release group – four of us began our process together on January 1:
- We each made a long-term plan that we could follow.
- We each made an intention statement for our journey.
- We agreed to keep daily food journals to be aware of how we’re treating our bodies.
- We email each other every morning with three specific commitments for the day.
- We speak on the phone once a week to share and coach each other through triumphs and challenges.
Ironically, I got sick two days after we started. During a group call, I talked about feeling like I was slacking because I was giving in to my body’s need for rest rather than exercising. One of my compatriots reminded me that my intention for this process is to treat my body with loving care, and right now that means getting it back to full health.
Ever since then, one of my commitments each day has been to get to bed by a certain time. While I was still making my way back to health, I would go to bed as soon as I got home from work (around 5:30 p.m.). As I got a bit better, I pushed it back to 7, then 8. This week I’m at 9 p.m.
My commitment is that by that time, all of my electronics are off and I’m in bed either reading or watching Gilmore Girls (low-stress TV 🙂 ).
Having this structure and accountability for resting has been amazing – not only has it helped me recover my strength and health, but it is helping me to break some workaholic habits that I fell into after the big breakup last year.
The whole process feels so affirming and loving – I’m treating my body well because I want to, and I’m giving myself structure, support, and accountability because that makes it easier for me to follow through.
And the most awesome part — this week I’m fitting into two pairs of jeans that I haven’t been able to wear in the last year!! YAHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Today’s miracle: I’m treating my body well because I want to!!!
