The car accident

a.k.a. – Carried on the wings of angels

This is going to be quick because I’m utterly exhausted this evening.

This morning on my way to work, I had a car accident.  The road was very slick, and although I was going under the speed limit, I still lost traction and went all over the road.  Scary.

I hit the guardrail on the right side, then slid all over the road back to the median on the left and plowed into a snowbank.  Thank goodness the snow was plentiful and soft – the damage to my car is very minimal because the snow cushioned so much of the impact on both sides.

At least I had this beautiful view to look at while I waited for the police and tow truck!

At least I had this beautiful view to look at while I waited for the police and tow truck! Yes, that is part of the snowbank on my dashboard. 😉

Once I started sliding, it felt like everything happened in slow motion and hyper reality.  I remember having the thought, “I know I’m going to crash, so please God help me land in the place that will cause the least damage.”

I truly think I was being carried on the wings of angels.  I wasn’t hurt; my car needs a new tail light and an alignment, but nothing worse. The people who responded – from AAA to the cops to the EMTs to the truck drivers who pulled over to make sure I was okay – were amazing.

I was able to stay present through the whole thing, and I even managed to be pretty cheerful.  Once I got to work, though, all of the adrenaline drained away and I spent six hours trying to stay awake.

In the midst of all of this, there was a murder last night in our town, so all of that work time was spent researching the murder victim.  She was a remarkable woman and I’m so glad that I had the chance to meet her, even if only through a computer screen the day after her death.

The two events in such quick juxtaposition reminded me just how lucky I am.

Today’s miracle: I am truly carried on the wings of angels.

PS – I wrote a bit more about the accident and what I learned from it in today’s newsletter (before all the adrenaline completely left me!)  Check it out by clicking here: http://eepurl.com/uC5h5

That was scary, and I’m glad that you’re perfectly fine. Winter season makes it more difficult to drive for it makes the road quite slippery. We should take extra careful handling the wheels. Presence of mind and practicing safety measures such as wearing the seat belt will lessen the risk of severe injuries in case of an accident.
