Man Prayer

Before I start what I intended to write tonight – I just learned that a friend who lives out west was in a skiing accident over the weekend and is in the hospital with a spinal injury.  According to his wife, he is stabilized and breathing and talking on his own, but he is currently paralyzed from the shoulders down.  She said on Facebook, “He has some movement in his left bicep before surgery so there is hope and I am hoping for the very best! I believe so incredibly in Derek’s determined spirit that he will amaze us down the road! … I want everyone to know I feel all the prayers, thoughts, positive vibes and feel surrounded in love and it is keeping us going.”

Please join me in sending up prayers to support Derek and Amanda as they go through this scary time.  My prayer is that no matter the outcome, they face it with the joy and vibrant spirit that they bring to all things.  May they find the miracles in every victory, and may they trust in their own strength and the love and support of their community to take them through the challenges.

Now, on to the regularly scheduled post…

I just returned home from a wonderful evening watching a staged reading of The Vagina Monologues and dancing the One Billion Rising dance (yes!  I actually got to dance this time!)

The production was really well done.  If you’ve never seen the show, don’t be scared off by the name – it’s well worth the time to find a stage production or rent the DVD.  Truly powerful and amazing.

Man Prayer

May I be a man.
Whose confidence comes from the depth of my giving.
Who understands that vulnerability is my greatest strength.
Who creates space rather than dominates it.
Who appreciates listening more than knowing.
Who seeks kindness over control.
Who cries when the grief is too much.
Who refuses the slap, the gun, the choke, the insult, the punch.
May I not be afraid to get lost.
May I cherish touch more than performance.
And the experience more than getting there.
May I move slowly not abruptly.
May I be brave enough to share my fear and shame.
And gather the other men to do the same.
May I stop pretending and open the parts of me that have long been numb.
May I cherish, respect and love my mother.
May the resonance of that love translate into loving all women and living things.
Love.

When I got home, I looked it up online and found this absolutely astounding video that features men from all over the world speaking the poem in their native languages.  So beautiful.

Today’s miracle: Prayers for a man and from men.  Beautiful.
