Last week I had a couple of really cranky days. By the middle of the second day, I was ready to crawl out of my own skin! Rather than doing anything drastic, I reached out to my friends.
I put up a message on Facebook that said, “Quick – someone tell me a joke. I woke up on the crabby side of the bed this morning!”
Within a few minutes, the jokes were pouring in and I was belly laughing in the middle of the newsroom.
And what struck me the most (in addition to how wonderfully funny my friends are) is how incredibly DIVERSE they are! I got spiritual jokes, theater jokes, “walks into a bar” jokes, John Paul Sartre jokes (I have to admit that several days later I still don’t understand that one), lawyer jokes, and more.
For your reading pleasure, here are a few of my favorites:
Two guys were discussing popular family trends on sex, marriage, and family values.
Bill said, “I didn’t sleep with my wife before we got married, did you?”
Larry replied, “I’m not sure, what was her maiden name?”
~~
A mushroom walks into a bar. The mushroom orders a drink. The bartender says, “We don’t serve your kind here.” The mushroom says, “Why not? I’m a fun guy.”
~~
How many stage managers does it take to change a light….already done.
~~
How many IATSE stagehands does it take to change a light bulb? 5! YOU GOT A PROBLEM WITH THAT!!!?
(Yes, those last two are for the theater geeks amongst us) 🙂
~~
False pregnancy: laboring under a misconception.
~~
What’s the difference between a dead skunk in the road and a dead lawyer in the road? Skid marks in front of the skunk.
~~
It’s so hard to tell a joke with a pun to a kleptomaniac because they always take things literally.
~~
There were also a couple of video links that were outstanding. Here’s my favorite (a classic bit with Bob Newhart): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ow0lr63y4Mw

And, amusingly, I got one perennial favorite three separate times:
A horse walks into a bar. The bartender says, “why the long face?”

A few days later I turned to Facebook on another topic and once again my friends didn’t disappoint. Last weekend, I joined an online dating site on a whim. For the most part over the last year and a half, I haven’t minded my singleness. I had a lot of healing and growing and learning to do after my last relationship. And then suddenly last weekend – BOOM! I was ready.
Mid-week, I got an introductory email from a guy that made me laugh so hard I HAD to share it with my friends. In the email he called me “the cutest lil frog kisser” and then said he hoped my smile wasn’t dipped in “3 layers of crazy psycho sauce“.
That is, for certain, unique amongst the missives I’ve received. The responses from my friends ranged wildly from
“It’s destiny!” to “RUN!!!!”
One particularly funny friend from high school said, “Damn, I wish I had opening lines like that!”
Another friend took a more pragmatic stance: “I’d totally meet this guy. Better to spend 1/2 hour over a cup of coffee being entertained, & bewildered and ending up with a great internet dating story than to be bored stiff and wish you’d have just stayed home watching Americas Got Talent. Of course, that opinion only holds true if he’s at least a little attractive.” (For the record, this guy is from a different part of the country, so a 1/2 hour over coffee wasn’t in the cards anyway.)
And finally, a very good friend who I’ve known since our awkward middle school days had the best line:
“As the only man (I assume) you ever hung out with wearing white sequined bell bottoms, even I think you should run from that kind of crazy.”
~~
In both cases I heard later from multiple friends saying they were also having hard days, and being able to laugh along with the craziness going on in my threads helped them to feel better as well. And that sounds like a miracle to me!
It’s okay to reach out when we’re not feeling our best. The laughter we find can brighten more than just our own day!
