Learning (wait for it) patience

A couple of months ago, I started doing some layout at the newspaper. Often it’s just one page a day, but sometimes it’s as much as 8 pages in a day. I enjoy it – it activates that part of my brain that really loves two-dimensional puzzles.

Perfection vs. deadlines

Tonight’s post is a bit early because we have big thunderstorms rolling through and I want to turn my computer back off in a few minutes.

This last week has been another exercise in letting go of perfection for me.  I had a big project at the newspaper that kind of kicked my butt. At …

Sharp shooter, part 2

I brought my shooting range target in to work and my editor posted it outside the newsroom with this sign that he made:

He has now started calling me “Dirty Carey”.  🙂

Tonight I milked a goat for the first time.

That’s all for today.  And really, isn’t that enough?

Sharp shooter

Over the weekend I did something brand new – I shot a gun for the first time!

In my continuing odyssey of super-cool things that the newspaper has sent me to do, I took a gun safety class that included a session at the firing range on Saturday.

Having never shot a gun before, I …

Someone bring back my old New Hampshire

I woke this morning to a message on Facebook that said, “Someone bring back my old New Hampshire.”  It took me a minute to figure out that she was referring to yet another local murder.

Our tiny corner of the country usually only sees a murder rarely. Something absolutely unprecedented in my memory has happened …

The sign of a good place to be

I spent about six hours in the newsroom today – the first time I’ve ever gone in on a day off.  I went because I was deep in the midst of a big project and there’s software on my computer there that made it much simpler.  Plus, my colleague Andrew is a whiz at just …

A dream fulfilled – and I didn’t realize it!

A dream fulfilled

I had a moment of epiphany earlier today.  How it had escaped my attention until today, I can’t imagine, but here it is: I’ve often read newspapers and magazines and thought, “I’d love to write a column someday.”

I imagined that it would be a self-help column, or maybe something that tells human interest stories …

Waving the white flag

Skiing at Bretton Woods

Over and over for the last few days, this is the theme that keeps coming up.  I’m being called to learn how to surrender at deeper and deeper levels.  And let me just be frank – surrender has never been one of my stronger attributes, even on a good day.

The Universe has been …
